When to throw in the towel....

Published on: 16 Jul 2024

Life can be unpredictable, much like a dramatic football match or high-stakes political rally. Gareth Southgate's surprise resignation as England's Manager and Donald Trump's recent brush with danger have made headlines and sparked conversations. These events got us thinking: when is the right time to quit your job?

Sign #1: When you've lost the passion

Imagine being Gareth Southgate, leading the England team through thick and thin, only to realise one day that the fire in your belly has dimmed. Maybe the pressure is too much, or perhaps you're just yearning for a quieter life. If the thought of another Monday at your current job makes you want to pull out a Southgate and quickly exit, it may just be the time to move on!

Tip: If you are more excited about what's for lunch than your actual work, it's a red flag. Follow your passions - life's too short for boring jobs and bland sandwiches.

Sign #2: When safety is a concern

Donald Trump's recent narrow escape from an assassination attempt raises a more serious question: how safe do you feel in your current job? While most of us aren't dodging bullets, if your workplace feels toxic, or worse, unsafe, it's definitely likely time to consider your options.

Tip: Your well-being is paramount. If you're constantly looking over your shoulder or dreading interactions with certain colleagues, it's time to pack your bags and hit the road.

Sign #3: When you're stuck in a rut

The endless loop... sound familiar? Do you feel like Bill Murray in 'Groundhog Day' living the same monotonous workday over and over again? If your job has become a repetitive loop with no learning or growth opportunities, it might be time to make a change. Break free from the monotony before you start reciting your daily schedule in your sleep.

Tip: Seek out new challenges and opportunities for growth. A stagnant job can make you feel like a zombie - don't let your career be the next 'Walking Dead' spin-off.

Sign #4: When your values no longer align

This could feel like an ethical dilemma! Maybe your company's values have shifted, or perhaps you've undergone a personal transformation. If you find yourself cringing at company meetings or disagreeing with their policies, it's a sign. Your job should align with your principles, otherwise you'll constantly feel like you're swimming against the tide.

Tip: Align your career with your core values. Working for a company that mirrors your ethics and beliefs can make going to work feel less like a chore and more like a mission.

Sign #5: When you have bigger fish to fry

Sometimes, life presents you with opportunities that are too good to pass up. Whether it's starting your own business, pursuing further education, or simply exploring the world, there are times when you just have to seize the day. Don't let your current job chain you to mediocrity when you're destined for greatness.

Tip: Evaluate your life goals regularly. If your job isn't helping you achieve them, it might be time to take the leap and pursue those bigger fish.

So to conclude, as we all know, quitting, leaving a job and making the big jump is a big decision, and often comes with a mix of fear, excitement and relief. Take a page from Southgate's book - he has had 8 great years and been the most successful Manager over 6 decades, but he knows now is the time to step down. He may not have 'bought it home', but he leaves with his head high and lots of respect.  And remember, like Trump narrowly missing danger, sometimes it's just a matter of self-preservation. Listen to your gut, weigh your options up, and do not be afraid to take the plunge. Your dream job could be just around the corner, waiting for you to take that first step. Happy quitting.!
